LOW IMPACT FARMING
FOR THE FUTURE

OUR COMMITMENT

At Loch Duart our aim is to raise the best quality salmon at the lowest possible impact to the environment.

We recognise that sustainability is a journey that takes time and commitment. Here are some of the proactive steps which we are taking.

OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

As an industry leader in welfare our aim is to become an industry leader in sustainability. That’s why we’ve partnered with feed supplier BioMar to provide our carbon footprint modelling. We aim to publish this data on an annual basis and set out clear steps to improve our carbon footprint.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

The total amount of emissions causing climate change (greenhouse gases) to produce one kilogram of farmed fish. Emissions are expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents per kilogram (CO2 eq/kg).

HYBRID TECHNOLOGIES

Loch Duart is the first salmon farm in Scotland to introduce a low carbon emissions hybrid feed storage barge. The hybrid power system for the barge, combining battery and diesel power, will significantly reduce carbon emissions. The Barge will allow for efficient sea freight deliveries helping remove lorries from our roads. There will also be the additional benefit of noise reduction using the electric motor. Lower loads on the generator means less maintenance, prolonging the lifespan of the vessel improving Loch Duart’s carbon footprint into the future.

SUSTAINABLE &
TRACEABLE FEED

We’ve partnered with Biomar to design salmon feed that is unique to Loch Duart. High in marine content, we believe this feed replicates the salmon’s diet as close as possible and optimises fish health. All of these ingredients come from sustainable and traceable sources and easily accessed through the BioMar discovery App.

Fishmeal is a commercial product mostly made from fish products not generally used for human consumption. Fish oil is derived from trimmings and rejected products of typically herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. These contain the essential and heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The marine ingredients Biomar use within our feed are certified responsibly sourced by the Marin Trust.
